Welcome to Generation Gap where we ask you about your favorite generation of a certain multi-generational car nameplate. Then, explain why your choice is right to the rest of us uneducated folks.
This week’s Generation Gap focuses on a line of cars which is somewhat of a weakness for me: RWD Volvo wagons! Since before 2000 Volvo has never had distinct generational redesigns, I have decided that each model line (e.g. Duett, 140, 240, 740, etc.) will represent one generation. Thus, we have a period of nearly fifty years to choose from in today’s Generation Gap. As always, vote for your favorite and explain in the comments. Let’s begin.
The options:
Volvo Duett [1953 - 1969] (and facelift)
Volvo Amazon [1956 - 1970]
Volvo 140 Series [1966 - 1974] (and facelift)
Volvo 200 Series [1974 - 1993]
240^
260^
Volvo 700 Series [1982 - 1992]
740^
760^
Volvo 900 Series [1990 - 1998]
940^
960/V90^
I myself would have to go with the 700 series, the underrated brother of the 200 line...many memories were made in them, and they are awesome with a turbo-4 and stick shift...
However, choose which you prefer here!

You forgot one.
If we went for pure wagon-ness the Duett has to win. That thing is almost a Van. But if were judging by pure Volvocity, the 700-series comes out on top.

Right! How could I forget... :P

I always thought a V8-swapped 740 would make a hell of a sleeper, although you could say that about any of these, I suppose.

But, how many were sold as diesel brown manuals?

Did you read my dream journal plans for my 740?

Nice, that’ll be a fun project. It’s always good when you can combine everyday practicality with melted rubber and tire smoke.

Most, if not all I’m pretty sure... :)

When I think of “Volvo wagon”, this comes to mind.

That’s why I feel the 700 series is underrated...

AMAZON AMAZON AMAZON (122S) AMAZON
The last truly beautiful car Volvo produced until their new design language with the first gen S60, etc. Not to say that the 140, 200-series, 700-series, 900-series, etc. weren’t handsome in their own boxy ways, but... If Volvo had kept styling cars like the Amazon, we might have ended up with Volvos that look like BMWs! I always look at the Amazon and notice the sorta kinda twin kidney-shaped grille.

I do find the Amazon beautiful as well :)
But the ironic thing about the Amazon is that at the time the P1800 was designed to be a less frumpy Amazon coupe, suggesting that some thought the Amazon was too dowdy...I guess it was kind of like a Ford Falcon > Mustang scenario...
I do like the new era Volvos as well, considering I now own/drive one! Volvo styling is basically three segments: 1930s-1960s - art deco/post war style; 1960s-1990s - boxier than a box of Lego; 2000s-today - chiseled Swedish physique...
